It’s true. I know. Crazy.
You know what else is breaking news?
Men — well — straight men want to make sure I have one.
And, not just me, all women. They want to make sure that every woman they meet has a vagina, which is why, I think they want to get in our pants so bad.
While ordering my lunch today, I noticed that the female cashier was being hit-on by a male worker. He was trying so hard to tell her sweet nothings, while she tried so hard to shoo him like a fly and take my order.
Seriously guy? It’s the lunch rush. I think your timing is a foreshadowing of what you’re like in bed: hurried and selfish.
This incident reminded me of a time when I visited a government office to obtain an identification card, and the man behind the counter, a gentleman hailing from a Caribbean island that was once a Spanish colony, was more interested in my vagina print, than my finger prints.
Sure, it was completely and incredibly annoying. But that’s what women go through on a daily basis. Some men are more subtle than others, but it happens quite often. And it’s not because women enjoy being hit on – quite the opposite actually – it happens because men are men and this is how they’re socialized to be around all women.
In my case, what was completely and incredibly unacceptable was that I was in a government office, handing over all of my most personal information. Legal name, driver’s license, credit and criminal history, payment information, work history, addresses and phone numbers. And there was Rico Suave, intently staring at each piece.
Generally, women have to power to say “No.” Like when a guy asks for your number, you can either say no or if you want to be polite give him a wrong number. But with this guy, he had all of my information - and I felt powerless.
I recognized that feeling in the cashier, which is why I spoke up. I wasn’t rude. I didn’t ask to speak to a manager. I just said a few words to the guy. And, guess what? The cashier also spoke up. Something I don’t think she would’ve done on her own. He actually apologized and went back to his duties.
For those of us that actually have a job, which pays us less than our male counterparts, know that we have to conduct ourselves with dignity and professionalism. And sometimes we find ourselves unable to speak up against actions that we find uncomfortable. We worry about looking weak. We worry about earning respect.
To some of our more cynical readers, this may all sound like the rant of a man-hating lesbian. You have to take my word for it, I don’t hate men. And, I actually have fantastic straight and gay boy friends that treat women as equals. This is not about them. This not even about the men that degrade you from their moving vehicle or believe that a woman’s purpose is to serve them. This is really about us.
This is about us sticking together - regardless of our cattiness in the workplace. This is about us voting in our best interest - regardless of our personal and political affiliations. This is about us and our rights as women - regardless of sexual orientation.
It’s about us. And, it’s about time. So, let’s stick together, because alone we are isolated, but together we are bound.
